Open Textbooks @ UQ has published two new open textbooks, Understanding Child and Adolescent Development: A Guide for Educators and A Portable Workbook for Data Analysis: R for the Social Sciences.

About Understanding Child and Adolescent Development: A Guide for Educators

Understanding Child and Adolescent Development: A Guide for Educators is a new open textbook by Associate Professor Elizabeth Edwards, Linh Chu, and Brooke Avery-Overduin. It was created to provide accessible, evidence-informed support for educators and those working with children and young people.

The book gives an overview of child and adolescent development spanning biological, cognitive, and psychological change, and how these shape identity over time. It engages with issues from young people’s lives (and classrooms) and their diverse experiences.

Associate Professor Edwards said:

I’m really excited to introduce my students to this text, as it brings together contemporary research and real-world issues in a way that is accessible, relevant, and directly applicable to educational practice.

About A Portable Workbook for Data Analysis: R for the Social Sciences

Written by Associate Professor Renee Zahnow and Jingyeong Song, this open workbook is built for people who want to practise statistics in a social science context.

It is designed to sit alongside social science methods training and statistical learning and is a hands-on companion to A Portable Introduction to Data Analysis. Each chapter walks through a task that comes up in real empirical research. It gives the R syntax step-by-step, and includes exercises to build skills using publicly available datasets.
