ORCID

Benefits of ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is the authority source for external identifiers for University of Queensland staff and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates. An ORCID ID will belong to you throughout your scholarly career. ORCID enables integration, allowing systems to connect researchers, publishers, funders and other organisations. A Quick Tour of the ORCID Record (Vimeo, 3m 2s) provides more information.

Benefits include:

  • Disambiguation — a researcher's name may be common, may change over time or be presented differently on different platforms. Your ORCID will help you track your research activity and distinguish yourself and your body of work, making it easier to get credit for your research.
  • Connectivity — connecting your ORCID to University systems via UQ eSpace will improve your publication workflows and enhance identity management at UQ, making it easier for the University to associate you with your research activity. Connecting your ORCID to your other external identifiers will help to automate your research workflows and reduce the amount of time you spend on administrative tasks.
  • Discoverability — a complete and connected ORCID profile is a valuable promotional tool, allowing you to accurately showcase the breadth of your scholarly work and establish your contribution to your field.

Register and link your ORCID to UQ eSpace

Link your ORCID with UQ systems via our authenticated process to ensure that your publications are correctly identified in our systems and linked to your profile.

UQ staff

Create or link your ORCID to UQ eSpace

If you are not sure if you already have an ORCID or have forgotten the login details, watch Lost ORCID credentials? We can help! (Vimeo, 1m26s).

Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students

HDR candidates who commenced on or after 1 April 2018 are required to register an ORCID ID with UQ by their confirmation milestone.

  1. Log into UQ eSpace using your student credentials (e.g. s1234567).
  2. Choose to create a new ORCID and link it to UQ eSpace or link your existing ORCID to your student profile.

Note: You must link your ORCID to your UQ eSpace student profile to be able to deposit your thesis or publications to your student profile.

Sign-in to ORCID with UQ credentials

Link your ORCID login to your UQ credentials so you can use your UQ username and password to log in.

  1. Sign in to ORCID and select Institutional Account (tab next to Personal).
  2. Search for the University of Queensland and click Continue.
  3. Log in with your UQ username and password, e.g. uqjsmith for staff or s1234567 for students.
  4. Agree to the terms and conditions of the Australian Access Federation (AAF).

Once this authority has been established on your device, you can log in to ORCID using the same credentials as you do for UQ access. If you then use a different computer you will have to do these steps again.

Develop and use your ORCID

After you have linked your ORCID to UQ eSpace, populate your profile with information about you and your research activities to make it useful.

  • Ensure the visibility is set to Everyone. You can hide individual records if needed.
  • Complete the biography, education and employment sections to build your ORCID profile.
  • Include all variations of your name in Also known.
  • Add countries in which you have undertaken research under Country.
  • Add keywords that describe your research in Keywords.
  • Add relevant links under Websites, including your UQ Researcher page, Google Scholar profile page, personal research blog or social media channels you use for research.

Add works to your ORCID profile

  • Use the Search & link wizard to import your publications via digital object identifiers (DOIs), PubMed ID, Crossref or other author identifiers such as Scopus Author Identifier.
  • Auto-update your publication list by granting Crossref permissions - a message will be sent to your ORCID inbox from Crossref to authorise this (Tip: make sure your ORCID is added to manuscripts submitted to publishers).
  • Add your peer review activities by synchronising your ORCID profile and Web of Science Researcher Profile.
  • Import funding information using the Search & link Uberwizard.

Use your ORCID ID

Include your ORCID ID when you:

  • submit manuscripts — publishers are adding ORCID IDs of contributors to a publication's metadata, correctly attributing your work to you.
  • apply for funding — the Australian Research Council (ARC) has ORCID integrated into the grant submission workflow. Other funding bodies including the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the US National Institutes of Health and the Wellcome Trust are requesting ORCID IDs from grant applicants.
  • accept peer review assignments — you can be acknowledged for your contribution to the research community.
  • renew professional memberships —  organisations are increasingly using ORCID ID to help link and disambiguate members' identity.
  • create your poster presentations — get your QR Code for your ORCID ID and include it on your poster.
  • communicate with colleagues — add your ORCID ID to your email signature or business card.
