Borrowing rules and charges

What you can borrow and access

Your Library membership type determines borrowing conditions and access to online resources.

Restrictions

  • High use items may be borrowed for 24 hours and cannot be renewed.
  • Reference items must be used within the Library and can't be borrowed.
  • Television recordings and Warehouse materials in the 18-plus collection are only available to UQ students and staff.

Borrowing terms and conditions

When you borrow from the Library, you are responsible for:

  • checking your email regularly for notices from the Library
  • returning your loans by the due date
  • looking after your items and returning them in the condition they were in when you borrowed them
  • returning your items if you plan to be away for an extended period
  • returning high use items to the library where they were borrowed.

Failure to comply with these conditions may invoke penalties under the Library Code of Practice Policy

Contact us if you cannot return items by the due date or have questions about loans.

UQ ID cards

UQ students and staff should use your:

  • UQ ID card for borrowing and accessing library learning spaces outside of usual opening hours
  • UQ log in to access online resources

You may be asked to present your UQ ID card for identification purposes and should not share it.

Library notifications about loans

We may contact you by email if your loan is due, overdue or recalled. View a loan type to see when we will send the notifications.

Overdue fines and penalties

  • Overdue fines may apply for overdue and non-returned items.
  • We reserve the right to add other charges as required, such as for damaged items.
  • Fines are totalled and added to your account when items are returned and processed.
  • You cannot borrow, renew or place requests if you have an overdue item or fines equal to or exceeding $20.
  • Accumulated overdue fines totalling less than $20 don't have to be paid. We will waive these fines at the end of the semester.

Pay Library fines

We accept Mastercard and Visa payments.

If your membership has expired, you can pay online at UQ Payments.

If you are making a payment to reduce your total amount owing to below $20, note that an individual charge must be paid in full.

Allow 1 working day for your payment to be processed and your library record to be updated.
