History of the Library

Today’s world is a complex information society, and the UQ Library plays a key role in equipping our UQ community with the information and skills to thrive in this environment. The Library's core purpose is to connect people with knowledge. There have been many changes in our people, services and spaces since the Library began but this has remained constant.

From George Street to St Lucia

From 1911 to 1923, the University of Queensland Library was housed in the Old Government House in George Street. It occupied three rooms and had desk space for 24 readers. In 1939, Richard Pennington was appointed as the first University Librarian.

The Library moved to the St Lucia campus in 1948.

In his publication, The University of Queensland Library: A Centenary History, 1910-2010, former librarian John East identifies key milestones for the Library, dating from the beginnings of a professional library for the University to the growth of research services and the move online.

There have been many changes in our libraries over our history; some are noted below.
