An alphabetical list of some of the facilities in library spaces and where to find them. 

Anatomical models

A student resource available on Level 3 of the Biological Sciences Library.

AskUs desk

Get help in person by visiting an AskUs service point in these locations during staffed hours:

Virtual service point

Virtual service points are help points with a computer screen and camera. Video call AskUs, and selected other UQ teams, at a virtual service point in these locations:

Assistive technology rooms

Assistive technology rooms are on level 1, Central Library. They contain special software and equipment including:

  • Dragon 15 voice control and dictation software
  • Fusion 21 (Jaws and ZoomText) screen reader and magnification software
  • height adjustable desks
  • dimmable lights
  • footrest and backrest
  • document magnifier
  • adjustable touch screens
  • webcam
  • Pearl Camera (document scanner and text-to-voice).

Access to these rooms is via an Accessibility and Welfare Adviser.

The collection (books and items)

General collection

Books and items for teaching, learning and research. Visit Borrow from the Library for loan, renewal and return information. See how to find an item on the shelf. Collections are located in the Architecture and Music Library, Central Library, Dutton Park Health Sciences Library, JK Murray Library and Walter Harrison Law Library.

High Use and requested items

  • High Use: in-demand items on course reading lists These are available for short loans from dedicated High Use sections.  Visit Borrow from the Library for loan, renewal and return information.
  • Requested items: items requested by someone and put aside in the Requested items section for 5 days for collection. See:

Device recharge station

Stand with a range of power connections to charge mobile devices.

Energy pods

Take a break in an energy pod, designed for short periods of rest: 

Exam booth

Ten high-walled booths in the High Use and Requested Items room on Level 1 Central Library.

During exam periods the spaces are reserved for sitting exams. Outside exam periods they are regular study spots that can be booked on UQ Book It.

Height adjustable desks

Desks that can be electronically adjusted to be higher or lower from the ground. 

These desks support people using wheelchairs and mobility devices that may not fit in other locations.

Kitchens

Kitchens in library spaces include hot and cold water, a fridge, microwave and seating. Kitchens are available at:

Laptop lockers

Visit a laptop locker to:

Lockers are available at Central Library, Dutton Park Health Sciences Library, Herston Health Sciences Library and JK Murray Library (UQ Gatton).

Library computers and monitors

Workstations for student use are available in all our libraries. Library computers run Microsoft Windows.

Connect your USB-C compatible laptop or device (this includes some tablets) at a study spot with a 24-inch screen, keyboard, and mouse located: 

Listening and viewing area

Area in Architecture and Music Library for using the:

  • Long Play (LP) record turntable 
  • DVD/VHS player
  • Blu-Ray disc player
  • cassette deck.

Presentation room

Room N206 on level 2 of Central Library contains the same standard UQ presentation equipment found in all lecture rooms but in a small-scale setting to allow you to practise presentations.

Printers, scanners and copiers

Library printers also function as copiers and scanners.

Returns

Automatic return shelf

Items placed on return shelves are automatically checked back into the library. These shelves are for high use, document delivery, and large items that don't fit in book return chutes. Most automatic return shelves are located in 24/7 spaces but access times vary in some locations as indicated below:

  • Level 1 Architecture and Music Library (accessible from 7:30am to 7:30pm)
  • Level 1 Biological Sciences Library
  • High use area, level 1 Central Library 
  • Dorothy Hill Engineering and Sciences Library  
  • Walter Harrison Law Library

Return chute

Place items in the return chute. When returns are processed, the items will be checked back into the library and removed from your account. Most return chutes are located in 24/7 spaces but access and times vary in some locations as indicated below:

Self-service loan machine

The machines are located in our physical collections spaces listed above

Follow the instructions on the loan machine to check out items from the collection. You will need your UQ ID card or library card to borrow from the Library.

Study spaces

Group and collaborative spaces

Group spaces are available throughout our libraries, with large tables suitable for group study.

Low-light

Low-light spaces are available for people who prefer to study in a lower-light environment. The overhead lighting is dim and individual table lamps provide low light.

Quiet spaces

Quiet spaces are often located on higher floors of our libraries and have mostly individual study options.

Soundproof booths

One-person and two-person soundproof meeting booths are available in some libraries.

Training rooms

Library training rooms include computers, a trainer's computer with a projector and a whiteboard. When not in use for training, the rooms are open for use. UQ students have priority in using the rooms during exam and revision times. Training rooms are located in Architecture and Music Library, Biological Sciences Library, Central Library, Duhig Tower, Dutton Park Health Sciences Library, Herston Health Sciences Library, JK Murray Library and Walter Harrison Law Library.
