Friends of the Library
The Library has been a place of learning and connection for UQ students and our community since 1910. In that time, giving has inspired the development of library collections and services.
In 1926, members of the UQ Dramatic Society gave ten pounds to the University in memory of UQ student John Denis Fryer led to the establishment of the Fryer Memorial Library of Australian Literature the following year. The Fryer Library has become one of our foremost collections of rare books, Australian literature and manuscript material. These collections supported teaching and research and formed the basis for engagement with a growing community of supporters and Friends of the Library – a group whose support, advocacy and giving enable the growth of special collections, library services and library fellowships.
Friends of the Library
The Friends of Fryer group was established in 1978. The Fryer Library supporters met regularly and helped grow the library's rare and special collections. From 1993, the group established a program of events to enable wider access to the treasures that the Library holds on behalf of the community. In 2014, the group became known as Friends of the Library, signalling an expanded program and diverse membership.
Dedicated members and the Fryer community remain an integral part of the Friends of the Library.
