National Reconciliation Week Blak History Challenge

Uni life
Published 19 May, 2025  ·  3 minute read time

Explore UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage in an engaging and interactive way this National Reconciliation Week (NRW) for your chance to win great prizes! Terms and conditions apply.

Based on the UQ Library publication UQ Has a Blak History, this activation invites UQ students to locate significant reconciliation-related sites at St Lucia campus, reflect on their cultural importance, and share their journey via social media.

How to participate

The competition is open to UQ students from 12pm on Tuesday 27 May until 11:59pm on Tuesday 3 June 2025.

  1. Visit any 2 of the 6 featured locations across the St Lucia campus (see clues below).
  2. Take a selfie at both of the sites you visit. Ensure the background is clear, so we can tell where you are!
  3. Make an Instagram post that includes both of your photos. In the caption, tag us @uniofqldlibrary and include the #UQBLAKhistory25 hashtag. Make sure your page is not private so we can see the photos.

Featured locations with clues!

  1. Power in Protest – find the bold mural that says “White Australia Has a Black History." on the exterior of Student Support Services. It still bears signs of protest and resilience.
  2. Faces in Stone – look for the carved frieze of an Aboriginal man at the outer entrances of Forgan Smith Building (East) e.g. the Law & Arts Building.
  3. Storytelling in Sandstone – outside Wordsmiths Café, this sandstone seat sculpture honours Oodgeroo Noonuccal’s poetry and family.
  4. Invocations from the River – these rock carvings were relocated from the Burnett River and now live near the Anthropology Museum.
  5. Legacy in Relief – seek out two sandstone Haut-relief faces in the corner of Great Court – one based on a Jinibara knowledge-holder, the other on a photograph of an Aboriginal Woman.
  6. Bonus Site – visit the Level 1 display in Duhig Tower for UQ Library’s curated Reconciliation and NAIDOC showcase.

Hints and cultural context can be found in UQ Has a Blak History. Explore the library’s curated Indigenous collections display to deepen your understanding of reconciliation, identity, and representation or look up Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collections on the Library website.

About the book: UQ Has a Blak History

UQ Has a Blak History shares key stories, artworks, and places connected to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories at UQ. Through this activation, we bring those stories to life, encouraging exploration, critical reflection, and reconciliation through place-based learning.

This initiative is proudly supported by UQ Library and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Services Team.
