About our placement program
We accept placement requests from current students of ALIA-recognised courses in library and information studies.
Your placement program will be designed to provide you with experience across our multiple teams and tailored to meet the learning objectives of your program of study.

During your placement you may be able to participate in a range of library duties across our teams. Our teams are made up of passionate professionals happy to share their experience with you.

The Collections and Digital Services team manages library collections, access and digitisation and supports the development of Open Educational Resources.
In this team you might:
- create or maintain digital learning resources, including course reading lists, library guides and open textbooks
- acquire and provide access to collections of physical and electronic resources
- create and enhance metadata
- manage, preserve and make accessible special collections and archives
- provide services and advice to UQ and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in support of research, teaching and learning.
Our librarians connect people to the Library and support research, teaching and learning at UQ. The team works closely with faculties, schools, institutes and centres, and UQ teaching hospitals to support the development of digital, data and information capabilities.
In this team you may:
- respond to client queries
- create and maintain online resources
- participate in consultations with clients
- deliver information and digital literacy
- join team activities and projects.
The Library Engagement, Technology and Strategy team oversees library strategy, staff capability, wellbeing, health and safety, and copyright. They also manage the Library’s online services, applications and specialist electronic equipment.
In this team you might:
- work with systems librarians to ensure our library resources are discoverable by library users
- use data and other evidence to demonstrate the value and impact of library services
- participate in projects across the library to improve our services
- assist internal and external library users by providing support across a range of technology, including hardware, software and online services.
Our Library Student Experience team manages the frontline student experience, providing library and IT help to students and library users, and oversees library spaces.
In this team, you may experience the delivery of student-facing services, including:
- applying research and design approaches to collect and review client experience data and feedback
- collecting, interpreting and reporting on student feedback or usage data to inform service improvements and strategic decision-making
- the development of programs or events that enhance the student experience
- research and analysis to inform space design or refurbishment projects, with consideration of student study behaviours, technology needs and collaborative learning environments
- project work that proposes improvements to better support diverse student cohorts.
The Scholarly Communication and Repository Services team supports open research, research data, outputs, and impacts, and the institutional repository UQ eSpace.
In these teams you might:
- gain practical insights into scholarly communication, including key concepts such as open access, persistent identifiers and discoverability
- prepare and structure metadata for repository ingest, learning about description, quality control and access
- observe frontline research support services, including how authors and users interact with the institutional repository, and how support is provided for research outputs and impacts, research data services, and all stages of the publishing process
- get involved in day-to-day research support management activities, including:
- improving workflows, processes and documentation
- reviewing and updating support resources and frequently asked questions
- working with the application development team on small projects, enhancements and testing new features
- managing the incoming flow of research publications from the University.

We review placement applications quarterly in February, May, July and November.
