From 1 June 2026, Jeff Cruz is the University Librarian and leader of the UQ Library. Jeff brings a wealth of experience and drive to the role.

About Jeff
Jeff becomes University Librarian after a successful 15-month tenure as Interim University Librarian and, before that, as Director of Library Student Experience. As Interim University Librarian, Jeff has guided the Library through a significant period of change, including:
- supporting the academic community during Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) negotiations with major publishers
- helping students and researchers respond to the growing impact of artificial intelligence
- leading the continued development of library spaces and digital services, further strengthening the Library’s support for students, academics and the broader community.
Jeff brings more than 20 years' experience across the library sector in Australia, the United States and Spain, including 13 years in senior roles spanning academic and public libraries.
In leadership positions at UQ, The University of Sydney and the City of Sydney, he has advanced strategic priorities by aligning library services with organisational goals and strengthening support for teaching, research, student experience and community engagement.
Priorities for the Library
Jeff is focused on delivering the 5-year UQ Library Plan, commenced in 2025, and the 2026 Plan on a Page, including:
- further improving library spaces, particularly environmental conditions for collections
- continuing to strengthen research support as the research environment evolves
- supporting the entire university with information and digital literacy, particularly in the responsible use of AI.
Professional and research interests
Jeff's particular interests in libraries include the student experience, physical and digital spaces and staff and leadership development.
His current research focuses on the intersection of academic libraries, the student experience and higher education policy and practice.
Jeff's previous research and publications focus on the history of EDIA in libraries.
Jeff replaces Dr Caroline Williams, who took up the position of University Librarian at the University of Sydney.
