Published 30 Mar, 2026  ·  2 minute read time

From Tuesday 7 to Monday 13 April 2026, we are improving the low-light study space on Level 3 of Central Library. During these upgrades, Level 3 will be closed.

We expect Level 3 to reopen on Tuesday 14 April. Other parts of Central Library will be open as usual.

For our students and staff who love low-light and low-sensory study spaces with gentle overhead lighting and study lamps, these upgrades are for you!

Request items from Level 3

As the general collection on Level 3 (I–Z call numbers) will be unavailable during the upgrades, you can request the items that you need.

To request available items from Level 3 for collection at St Lucia campus:

  1. Email the item title, author and call number to circ@library.uq.edu.au.
  2. You will receive a reply email when your items are available for collection in the High Use and Requested Items section on Level 1 of Central Library.

Request items online as usual to collect them at a campus other than UQ St Lucia.

Alternative style spaces are available

These upgrades are happening during the In-semester break to minimise the inconvenience to our students.

The work may be noisy at times. You may like to bring a set of noise-cancelling headphones or work in an alternative library space, such as:

  • Architecture and Music
  • Biological Sciences
  • Dorothy Hill Engineering and Sciences
  • Duhig Tower
  • Walter Harrison Law.

Let us know if the work becomes excessively noisy or if you notice anything that could be a safety concern.

About the low-light upgrades

In the past, we have offered low-light study spaces on Level 3 by turning off overhead lighting in certain areas and providing updated furniture with desk lamps. These areas are popular with people who prefer darker and low-sensory spaces.

This work further upgrades the low-light study area by removing most overhead lighting that is not over the collection and replacing it with wall-washed lighting around the perimeter of the floor.

You can expect gentle and dim lighting and excellent study vibes.
