Rae and George Hammer Memorial Visiting Research Fellowship
This fellowship encourages scholars to visit UQ and to access the Fryer Library collection for your research.
The collection embraces Australiana, rare books, literary and political papers, architectural plans and the papers of significant UQ scholars and alumni.
We invite Honours, Masters and PhD students from universities outside of Brisbane to apply.
Applications for the fellowship can be submitted throughout the year and will be assessed at the end of March, July and October.
Fellowship information
This fellowship was established by Dr Margaret Hammer in memory of her parents Rae and George Hammer and commemorates two remarkable people with a passion for History and English, who taught in New Zealand schools.
We are proud to offer meritorious students the opportunity to continue the research tradition of the Hammer family at The University of Queensland.
Award
The Fryer Library may award up to $2500 annually as a single prize or split among winners.
Successful applicants will also be provided with assistance in accessing the collections by Fryer Library staff.
The award is for expenses relating to a research trip to the UQ Fryer Library for your Honours, Masters or PhD including travel, accommodation, living expenses and research related costs.
Applicant eligibility
To be eligible for the fellowship you must:
- submit the application by the due date
- be enrolled in an approved program (Honours, Masters or PhD) from a university outside the metropolitan Brisbane area
- demonstrate the relevance of primary source materials held by the UQ Fryer Library to your research.
Selection criteria
To apply for this fellowship you must submit the following:
- Curriculum Vitae
- academic transcript
- outline of the research project and its relevance to the collections held in the Fryer Library (less than 500 words)
- statement of support from a lecturer or research supervisor, outlining the merits of the proposed research project and the applicant (less than 250 words)
- schedule of dates for proposed visit and proposed budget of expenses including travel, accommodation, living expenses and research related expenses (include quotes where possible).
The fellowship will be awarded to the applicant(s) showing the greatest merit as demonstrated by their supporting documentation and the relevance of their research to material held in the Fryer Library collection. Applicants will be considered by a selection panel including the Fryer Librarian, a UQ Library staff member and a UQ Academic staff member.
All applicants will be notified via email once the decision has been made by the selection committee.
Terms and conditions
As a winner of the fellowship, you have 12 months in which to visit the Fryer Library. You will receive the funds once the offer of the fellowship has been accepted in writing and you provide a receipt of booked travel for your visit.
You will be asked to:
- produce a brief written account of your experience during your visit, which we may use for promotional purposes
- submit a report outlining the benefit of the scholarship and providing feedback on your experience to the Manager of the Fryer Library within 3 months of completing your visit (less than 1000 words)
- provide the Manager of the Fryer Library with a digital copy of your completed research project, report or dissertation within a mutually agreed period following your visit.
