Open Textbooks @ UQ has published a new open textbook, The Practice of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

About the book

“The Practice of Counselling and Psychotherapy” is written by Dr Denis O’Hara, Jim Schirmer, Michael Ellwood and Dr Kate Witteveen from the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work. They also lecture in the Master of Counselling program at UQ.

This book is designed to introduce mental health professions to the practice of counselling and psychotherapy. The book covers a breadth of topics from the nature of the self, neurobiology, theories of psychotherapy, ethics of practice, integration, and case formulation.

The unique contribution of this book is its focus on the counselling process and the experience of persons engaged in the therapeutic encounter. In reading this book, you will be introduced to what is involved in the deep processes of therapy and through it have the potential to discover how to be with another.

Dr O’Hara said about creating the book:

“Designing and writing the book has been a wonderful collegial experience. The counselling academic team at The University of Queensland share a common view of what counselling and psychotherapy is and, as such, the project came together seamlessly. The Library staff were a fantastic support in the process, enabling the book to come to fruition.”
