Using library study spaces
Library spaces are open to everyone. We provide a welcoming and respectful environment for our students, staff, and visitors. We support clients with disability in their use of the Library.
Find the right space
Most library spaces don't require a booking and there are options to suit different uses.
Type of space | Located | Use |
---|---|---|
Collaborative spaces featuring group tables | Lower library floors | Interactive study and group work |
Quiet individual study spaces | Higher library floors | Quiet focused study |
Low-light spaces with lamps | Low-light locations | Low sensory study |
Check study space availability to see how busy our libraries are now.
Dealing with noise
No matter where you are in the Library, keep noise to a respectful level.
- Use headphones when watching videos or listening to music.
- Take phone calls outside of study areas.
- It's OK to politely approach others to let them know if they're being too loud.
Book a library study space
UQ students can make an online booking (UQ login required) up to 7 days in advance to use:
- study pods (individual semi-enclosed desks)
- individual rooms
- group rooms.
Rooms are popular so there are some guidelines:
- 3 bookings per person per calendar week (Monday to Sunday)
- 3 hours maximum per booking
- arrive on time and vacate the space 5 minutes before the end of your booking
- rooms aren’t soundproof so talk at a low volume
- cancel your booking if you no longer need it.
Locate your booked space
The spaces have names such as 01-W437 Law Library for a room or 12-N115-02 Central Library for a study pod, where:
- 12 – building number twelve
- N115 – room number N115 (the first digit, 1, is the floor number)
- 02 – study pod number
- Central Library – library name.
Use UQ Maps to find the room.
Computers and device docks
If you don’t need to use a computer or device dock, please use another space so you don’t inconvenience others who need access to these facilities.
Library computers log out automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity so other students can log in.
Some areas have computers and monitors where you can connect your device (device docks) and use the second screen.
Read about using Library computers and the software available.
Food and drink
Eating and drinking
- Cold food and drinks with lids are allowed in most library spaces.
- Dispose of rubbish in the bins provided and leave the space clean and tidy for others.
- Eat hot food in library kitchens (or outside) to reduce food smells that affect other people.
Library kitchens
Some spaces have kitchens available for your use, equipped with a fridge, microwave, and access to hot and cold water. Help keep the spaces tidy by
- not keeping food in the fridge overnight
- tidying your area when you are finished in the kitchen.
Be respectful of others using the kitchens, including the cleaning staff.
Contact us if our spaces require cleaning or maintenance, and to report food and drink spills.
Look after yourself and your belongings
Take regular breaks from studying to refresh, and make sure your valuables are never unattended. Take your belongings with you if you’re taking a break.
If you have lost or found something in the Library, you can:
- Visit an AskUs desk to ask if your item has been handed to us
- Contact UQ Security to report lost or found property.
Items found in the Library are regularly sent to UQ Security.
Get support or help from Library staff
We’re here to support you with a range of library issues, including dealing with noise or bad behaviour. Follow instructions from staff in Library spaces.
Visit an AskUs desk or contact us for help.
