Current UQ students and staff can access EndNote on Library computers or install EndNote on a personal device or UQ computer.
For your personal device
Before you download or update to a new version, do or avoid the following:
- Visit UQ Software Licensing to download the UQ licenced version of EndNote.
- Do not install EndNote (or EndNote libraries (files)) on cloud storage e.g. OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud
- Check compatibility and system requirements for your computer.
- Back up existing EndNote library files and any customised content (e.g. output styles and import filters), close all programs related to EndNote and uninstall previous versions.
- Check the current issues.
You may need to unzip the downloaded file to run the installation process.

Current issues
Mac users
M1 Macs
Users may get an error message such as "Word wasn't able to load an add-in. Your add-in isn't compatible with this version of Word". Office 365 version v16.46 has a compatibility issue with the current EndNote CWYW version. Try these steps:
- Quit EndNote and Word
- Open Finder and go to the Applications folder
- Highlight the Microsoft Word app file by clicking on it once. Note: You do not need to launch Word, just highlight it
- Go to the File menu at the top of your screen and choose Get Info
- Under General, check the option for Open using Rosetta
- If these steps don't fix the issue you can contact AskUs to downgrade your MS office version to be compatible with EndNote. Note: EndNote will work for users with x86 Intel Macs updated to Office 365 v16.46.
- When installing EndNote on macOS Mojave and later versions, you may need to perform this additional step.
Word EndNote add-in not appearing or has disappeared
Sometimes the EndNote add-in for Word does not appear after installing or disappears after initially being available.
Visit EndNote toolbar disappeared in Word for instructions on how to fix it.
Convert to plain text for documents on cloud storage
For cloud saved documents, EndNote will not automatically save a second copy when converting to plain text.
If you choose continue on the message window, EndNote will remove all EndNote code from your original document.
Follow these steps to safely convert to plain text on cloud saved documents.

Update or upgrade EndNote
To check that your EndNote software is updated to the latest version on:
Windows
- Click on Help
- Click on Check for Updates
Mac
- Click on the EndNote program menu
- Check for Check for Updates.
