What is EndNote?

EndNote is a sophisticated citation manager. Use EndNote to:

  • Create a list of references from your searches
  • Insert citations into a document
  • Produce a bibliography in any style within your document

A quick introduction to the essential functions of EndNote

Get EndNote

  1. Check that your computer, operating system and software meet the requirements but don't download directly from the EndNote site.
    EndNote for Mac OS Sierra will need the latest version of EndNote X8 to be fully compatible. Mac users may need to upgrade the operating system to be able to run EndNote.
  2. View the video about accessing the EndNote software.
  3. Download a UQ Library licensed version of EndNote (Windows or Mac). Note: If any of the pages appear blank, reload the page.
    If you are installing EndNote on a faculty/school computer (and you do not have administration rights) contact your IT support to perform the installation.

Update your EndNote

To check that your EndNote X9 software is updated:

Windows

  1. Click on Help
  2. Click on Check for Updates

Mac

  1. Click on the EndNote X9 program menu
  2. Check for Check for Updates

Upgrade your EndNote

Usually the software will announce when a new version is available. If you are updating between versions:

  1. Back up your existing EndNote library files and any customized content (e.g. output styles and import filters)
  2. Close all programs related to EndNote
  3. Uninstall the old version of EndNote
  4. Complete install of the new version

Current issues

  • If you are installing EndNote on a faculty/school computer (and you do not have administration rights) contact your IT support to perform the installation.
  • EndNote X9 for both Windows and Mac is now available for all UQ students and staff.
  • When installing EndNote on macOS Mojave, you may need to perform this additional step.
  • If you have trouble importing references from Google Scholar or any other database, and the journal name is being misplaced, try this suggestion.
  • Update released March 12, 2019 for Windows. To update automatically - In EndNote X9, under the “Help” menu, choose “Check for Updates…”.  To manually install, read the EndNote X9 Updates article.
  • There is an issue when installing EndNote on Windows 10. We recommend waiting 15 minutes after installation before running EndNote. 
    If a trial version of the EndNote software becomes installed, and you are asked for the product code, uninstall and reinstall.
