Password management

Aims and objectives

This module will:

  • provide information and guidance on account security
  • explore the use and benefits of password managers
  • outline common security issues

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • create passwords that are harder to guess and crack
  • understand how accounts are hacked and ways to reduce your risk
  • practice proper account and password management

2. Have you been hacked?

You can use sites like - Have I been pwned - to check whether websites associated with your email address have been breached. If your email is connected to a security breach, and you reuse passwords for multiple sites, you may be at risk.

Examples of places breached

Determined individuals will take large numbers of email addresses and associated passwords and  start trying them on major websites like Facebook, Gmail, Twitter etc. They try these email and password combinations to get access to accounts of anyone who uses the same password across all websites.

The lesson here is:

  • don’t use the same password everywhere
  • be vigilant in checking your account security every once in a while
  • don’t use the same password for extended periods of time (2+ years)

UQ Policy and procedures states that you should change your password every 12 months
