Aims and objectives

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a term used widely in various topics. This module will provide an introduction into what AI is, the different types, the implications of AI, what research is being done at UQ and how students can learn about or get involved with AI.

This module will:

  • discuss what AI is and the different types of AI
  • explore key concepts such as machine learning, deep learning and neural networks
  • outline various ethical implications and misconceptions surrounding AI
  • outline what AI related research is occurring at UQ and how students can study AI.

2. Types of AI

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) vs Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) vs Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)


ANI is programmed to perform a single task. It is AI that is currently readily available on the market for consumers, for example Siri and Google Translate. ANI is capable of completing simple repetitive tasks a lot faster than humans can, for instance checking weather, performing web searches or analysing raw data.


AGI is the sort of AI that is seen in movies like I, Robot (2004) with Will Smith. Despite machines being able to process data faster than we can, humans have the ability to strategise and tap into our memories to plan decisions based on emotion. AGI is expected to be able to reason, solve problems, make judgements and plan, to learn and to use prior knowledge in decision-making. AGI will be self-aware but lack emotion.


ASI hypothetically possesses intelligence far surpassing that of humans. It is purely theoretical at this point in time and there is debate about whether or not this level of AI will ever be achieved or realised.
