5. Subordinate legislation

Subordinate legislation is sometimes referred to as delegated legislation because, even though it is authorised by an Act of Parliament, it is made by a body outside of parliament.

Confusingly, this type of legislation is referred to in different ways on legislative websites, including as:

  • subsidiary legislation
  • legislative instruments
  • statutory instruments
  • regulations
  • subordinate legislation
  • delegated legislation.
