Open textbook grants for 2023

UQ academic authors, apply for a grant to create your own open textbook for your course! Grants are available from the Library and through the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) Open Educational Resource (OER) Collective.

UQ Library Open Textbook Grant

Our Grant Program aims to encourage UQ academic authors to create or adapt an open textbook for your course on Open Textbooks @ UQ. There are 2 types of grants available:

  • $2000 to substantially adapt an existing open textbook to your instructional needs.
  • $4000 to create an open textbook to replace a commercially published textbook for your course.

You can apply for this grant at any time. 

Apply for a UQ Library Open Textbook Grant

You can apply for both a UQ Library Open Textbook Grant and a CAUL OER Grant for the same project.

2023 CAUL OER Collective grant

Grants between $2500 and $4500 are available via the CAUL OER Collective with expressions of interest open between 16 January and 24 February 2023. UQ academic authors are eligible to apply for a Large Cohort Grant or a Small Cohort Grant.

Types of CAUL grants

Large Cohort Grants

Projects in this category will be for textbooks for a course with a minimum enrolment of 300 students. Priority will be given to:

  • First year courses
  • Textbooks that will be used across a number of courses
  • Courses offered more than once per year
  • Textbooks that have potential to be used across a number of institutions.

Small Cohort Grants

Projects for this category will be for textbooks for a course with a maximum enrolment of 299 students. Priority will be given to:

  • Courses in emerging disciplines
  • Textbooks associated with postgraduate courses
  • Course or discipline area taught at fewer than 5 institutions
  • Highly specialised subject areas.

Key dates for the 2023 CAUL OER Collective Grants 

  • Expression of interest open 16 January 2023.
  • Expression of interest closes 24 February 2023.
  • Recipients notified 5 April 2023.
  • Minimum of 6 chapters must be published by 31 December 2023.
