Fryer Reading Room open by appointment only

The Fryer Reading Room is open by appointment only until further notice for the health and safety of our clients. Our staff are available to assist you online.

Book an appointment

The Fryer Reading Room is open by appointment from 9am-5pm, Tuesday to Friday. To ensure the health and safety of our clients, there is a limit to the number of people allowed in the Reading Room at one time. Material is quarantined for 72 hours after use. You will be asked to wash your hands or to put on gloves prior to being issued with collection material.

To book an appointment, contact us via email, fryer@library.uq.edu.au, at least 48 hours before your proposed visit with:

  • the date you wish to visit
  • the time you wish to visit
  • details of the material you wish to view

Fryer staff will contact you to confirm your appointment.  We kindly ask that you do not come into the Reading Room if you are sick, waiting on test results for COVID-19, or you have been asked to self-isolate.

How we can help you

Fryer staff are available via email 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. We are happy to answer your queries about Fryer Library collections and can offer consultations for researchers, academics and students via phone and Zoom calls.

For any other library enquiries, AskUs is available to help.

What we've been working on

While the Reading Room has been closed, our staff have been working on several projects to improve our services and the ways you find and access our collections, including:

  • Updating records in our Fryer Manuscripts database to make them even more discoverable and informative.
  • Adding records to Fryer Manuscripts for new collections that we've acquired.
  • Undertaking preventative conservation on items that need it. This includes everything from moving some collection material into new archival containers to making minor paper repairs to creating preservation copies of at-risk photographic material.
  • Reuniting our hardback books with their dust jackets! This is a project which will allow anyone studying publishing or illustration to more quickly access these valuable resources (and they'll look extra pretty on our shelves, which we like).
  • Photographing items from our collections to make them available online for students and researchers. At the moment, our photographer is focusing on some of our unique rare books.
  • Working on updating our webpages over the coming months to provide you with an improved experience when you interact with us online.
  • Preparing exhibitions and events that we hope to be able to share with you later in the year.

Fryer Librarians are also continuing their object-based teaching in an online format for classes on gender studies, creative writing and history, as well as remotely supervising interns from different Faculties.

Follow us

Over the coming months, we will be posting regularly on the Library's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as well as highlighting some exciting collections and items on the Library's blog. Be sure to follow us on these platforms for announcements about future events, exhibitions and developments at Fryer.
