Friends of the Library cheer on Great Court runners

A group of Friends of the Library supporters came along to cheer on the UQ Library staff team, "Speed Readers" to a podium finish in the annual Great Court Race.

The Library team placed third in the mixed team staff relay with a time of 1 minute and 41 seconds, coming in behind Financial Business Services in second place with a time of 1 minute 39 seconds and the winners Student Services with a time of 1 minute 37 seconds.

"Speed Readers" made it onto the podium in the annual Great Court Race.

Friends of the Library member, Pauline Beames enjoyed taking part in the festivities of the Great Court Race.

"It was quite exhilarating to see so much youthful energy and enthusiasm and maybe some records were broken, but that's not important as it provided such a wonderful opportunity for community involvement."

"The organisers should be congratulated. A marvellous venue put to use so appropriately," Ms Beames said.

University Librarian, Bob Gerrity was pleased with the team's performance on the day.

"We're so pleased to have taken part in the staff relay. Our supporters who came along spurred us on and all the teams who took part deserve to be congratulated," Mr Gerrity said.

Seven teams entered the staff relay so only the top four got through to compete in the Great Court Race. The Library entered two teams this year and the other team just missed out in the time trials.

"The library staff involved have been out training each week under the guidance of our coach, Glen Dalgleish. It's a lot of fun and UQ Sport do a great job in bringing it all together each year!"
The Great Court Race has been running for 31 years and it is a lap around the 636m Great Court and includes a mixture of individual and relay races.

It is only the third year that there has been a staff category in the Great Court Race.
