A Special Day in the Fryer Library

The 21st of January 2015 was a special day in the Fryer Library with additions to two significant collections.

In the morning, in what was a very moving ceremony, Revd Dr Stephen Truscott SM, together with his sister Maria and cousin Carmel, donated the final diary kept by their much loved mother and aunt Meta Frances Truscott. Meta passed away on 27 November 2014, her passing recorded in a previous UQ Library Blog post by Senior Librarian Penny Whiteway.

Maria and Stephen Truscott present present Fryer Manager, Simon Farley and Senior Librarian Penny Whiteway with their mother Meta's final diary.

Meta's diaries, all held in the Fryer Library, span over 80 years of her life. The entries provide a fascinating glimpse into the day to day life of one of Brisbane's most respected local historians. A selection from the diaries will be on display at the Ashgrove Library on the 5th of September for the meeting of the Ashgrove Historical Society. Meta's daughter Maria McLellan (pictured above) will address the Society at this meeting to be held from 10am - 12pm.

Later the same day we received a visit from relatives of the late Fr Leo Hayes, whose collection, acquired for the Fryer in 1967, is one of our largest and most eclectic. New items donated include various literary publications, letters and Fr Hayes' academic robes and honorary MA degree conferred upon him by the University of Queensland in 1967, the final year of his life.

Mr Brian Murnane (pictured above) had written a small history of his great-uncle and was later contacted by a resident of Toowoomba, who had kept items given to him by Fr Hayes when he was ailing. A box of items sent to Brian included the bottle of whiskey given to Fr Hayes by General Douglas MacArthur, who had been grateful to access his rare maps of the Pacific during World War II.

Both UQFL385: Meta Truscott Collection and UQFL2: Leo Hayes Collection are available to researchers and interested members of the public in the Fryer Library Reading Room between the hours of 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday.
